The Inner Child Who Doesn’t Want to Be Fixed: A Radical Approach to Inner Child Healing

Why Traditional Inner Child Work May Be Keeping You Stuck

If you’ve explored inner child healing in Dublin, Kildare, or through online therapy sessions, you may have encountered a familiar narrative: rescue your younger self, comfort them, promise them everything will be okay, and bring them into your present where they’re finally safe.

But what if this approach—however well-intentioned—is actually creating more resistance than healing?

As a holistic therapist and family constellations facilitator practicing somatic therapy in Ireland, I’ve witnessed something profound: your inner child doesn’t need to be fixed. They need to be witnessed.

The Problem with “Fixing” Your Inner Child

Traditional inner child work often operates from a problematic assumption—that your younger self is broken, frozen in time, waiting desperately for your adult self to rescue them. This rescue narrative, while comforting on the surface, carries an unintended message: who you became isn’t acceptable.

Every defense mechanism you developed, every wall you built, every survival strategy you employed—these weren’t mistakes. They were intelligent responses to impossible circumstances.

When we approach inner child healing from a place of “fixing,” we inadvertently tell our nervous system that all that adaptation, all that survival wisdom, was somehow wrong. Your body registers this as another rejection, another message that you’re not enough as you are.

The Somatic Truth About Inner Child Patterns

From a somatic therapy perspective, your inner child isn’t a separate entity frozen in the past. They’re woven into your nervous system right now—living in the tension of your shoulders, the tightness of your jaw, the way you hold your breath when stressed, the protective patterns that activate when you feel unsafe.

These aren’t wounds. These are intelligent adaptations that deserve witnessing, not erasure.

Witnessing Without Rescuing: A Holistic Approach to Inner Child Healing

In my somatic therapy practice across Dublin, Naas, Newbridge, and Kildare, I’ve developed what I call “witnessing without rescuing”—an approach grounded in family constellation work and integrative somatic therapy.

This method acknowledges three foundational truths:

1. Your Inner Child’s Defenses Were Intelligent

If they learned not to trust, it kept them safe. If they learned not to need, it prevented further disappointment. If they learned to be invisible, it protected them from harm. These patterns developed for profound reasons and deserve recognition, not dismissal.

2. Healing Happens Through Acknowledgment, Not Change

The most transformative thing you can offer your younger self isn’t a promise that everything got better. It’s the simple truth: “What happened to you was real. The way you responded made sense. I’m not here to change you—I’m here to witness that you existed in difficulty and found a way through.”

3. Your Inner Child Exists Within Larger Systems

Your childhood patterns weren’t created in isolation. Family constellations work reveals that many of the survival strategies your inner child developed were actually invisible loyalties—unconscious agreements to carry what your family system couldn’t process, to repeat patterns that maintained stability even when they hurt you.

The Family Constellations Perspective: Beyond Personal Healing

One of the most powerful aspects of combining inner child work with family constellation therapy is understanding that your younger self may be carrying burdens that don’t actually belong to them.

In family systems work, we recognize that children instinctively try to balance the family system. If someone in your lineage couldn’t be seen, you became invisible. If someone couldn’t express their boundaries, you learned to override yours. If someone had to shut down their emotions to survive, you inherited that shutdown.

This isn’t your fault. It’s not even really your pattern—it’s a family pattern moving through you.

Releasing What Isn’t Yours to Carry

Through family constellation therapy in Ireland, we can help your inner child recognize: this weight didn’t start with you. You tried to help by taking it on—an act of love toward your family—but it was never yours to hold forever.

This holistic view transforms inner child healing from personal failure into systemic understanding. Your struggles aren’t isolated—they’re responses to complex forces, some of them much older than your lifetime.

A Somatic Practice for Meeting Your Inner Child Differently

Here’s a gentle somatic exercise you can practice at home—one that honors witnessing over rescuing:

Step 1: Ground in Your Body

Begin by noticing your feet against the floor. Feel the weight of your body. Notice any areas of tension, numbness, or holding. Don’t try to change anything—just acknowledge what’s present.

Step 2: Sense Into Your Younger Self

Without visualizing or forcing an image, simply notice if there’s an age or feeling that arises. You might sense a quality, an energy, or a particular time when you learned to protect yourself in specific ways.

Step 3: Honor Their Protection

Are they hiding? Let them hide. Are they angry? Let them be angry. Are they shut down and unreachable? Let them stay unreachable. That distance protected them from feeling too much.

Step 4: Offer Acknowledgment, Not Rescue

Place your hand on your heart or belly if it feels comfortable. Offer these simple truths:

  • “What happened to you was real. I’m not going to minimize it.”
  • “The way you responded made sense. Every defense you built was intelligent.”
  • “I’m not here to change you or fix you. I’m here to witness that you existed in difficulty and found a way through.”

Step 5: Notice Your Body’s Response

Some people notice softening. Some notice more tension—your inner child doesn’t trust this yet, and that’s perfectly okay. Some feel nothing at all—numbness is a protective response, and it’s welcome here.

Why This Approach Works: The Neuroscience of Safety

From a trauma-informed somatic therapy perspective, the nervous system doesn’t heal through promises or reassurances. It heals through embodied experience—through literally feeling that it’s safe enough to soften, to release, to be witnessed without judgment.

When we stop trying to “fix” our inner child and simply acknowledge their reality, something profound happens: the nervous system registers genuine acceptance for the first time.

This is why clients in my somatic therapy sessions across Dublin and online throughout Ireland often report feeling more settled in their bodies after witnessing work—not because anything changed, but because something was finally seen as it truly was.

A Free Guided Meditation: The Inner Child Who Doesn’t Want to Be Fixed

To support your journey of witnessing without rescuing, I’ve created a minute guided meditation that walks you through this transformative practice.

When Inner Child Healing Feels Incomplete

One of the most common concerns I hear in my therapy practice is: “I’ve done so much inner child work, but I still don’t feel healed.”

Here’s what I want you to understand: you might not feel fixed. You might not feel healed. You might not even feel better. And that’s actually perfect.

The work of witnessing your inner child isn’t about transformation in the traditional sense. It’s about recognition. Your younger self doesn’t need to be rescued or made happy. They need to be seen exactly as they are—with all their protection, all their pain, all their intelligent survival strategies.

That witnessing is its own form of healing. Not the kind that makes everything suddenly better, but the kind that says: you were real. Your experience was real. And you don’t have to be different for me to see you.

The Permission to Be Unhealed

Perhaps the most radical aspect of this approach to inner child healing is the permission it offers: you are allowed to be exactly where you are in your healing journey.

Your inner child is allowed to be exactly as they are—protective, resistant, unwilling to trust too quickly. That’s not a failure of healing. That’s intelligence.

In a culture obsessed with transformation and “getting better,” there’s profound power in simply being witnessed as you are—including the parts that don’t want to be healed, don’t want to forgive, don’t want to move on.

Those parts are welcome too.
